A new breed of tomato called Indigo Rose is debuting this year. Instead of bright red, this tomato is a dark purple in color. Why should the consumer care about a new color? Well the purple comes from antioxidants called anthocyanins, which are the same antioxidants that cause blueberries to be “blue”. This means that by eating these tomatoes, you are essentially getting the same antioxidants you would get from both the tomato itself and from eating blueberries. I haven’t been able to find a local store selling these, but if you’re a gardener, search for Indigo Rose seeds and you will find many sites offering them.
