32,000 Year Old Plant Revived

The Oldest Plant Revived From Russian Permafrost

Before the Silene stenophylla was revived, the oldest ever revived plant was the date plant, coming from Israel, approximately 2000 years ago. The s. stenophylla that was preserved in the russia perma-frost, came from an era 32,000 years ago. This is significant, because with today's technology, we are able to preserve seeds at the same temperature. In today's seed banks, the approximate survival rate is near 2% after 160 years. After that point, the DNA begins to degrade. Even though Russian Scientists were not able to directly germinate the seeds, they were able to clone them at an unprecedented success. The newly cloned plants even produced viable seeds.

In terms of health and more towards the scope of this blog, we look at the DNA preservation. We know the lotus is able to maintain its DNa for around 1,300 years (this is the oldest dated preserved DNA lotus sample). DNA preservation could one be used to thwart cancer and end many of the ailments of aging.

The Medipendant Difference

Why has the Medipendant become so popular and what is the main difference between the Medipendant and the Traditional PERS medical alert system? Even though they both serve the same function, the Traditional PERS has communication through base unit and the Medipendant has direct communication through the necklace and bracelet. This means if the door is shut or the client in distress is out of the house, they are actually able to maintain communication with the operator. Almost everything else is the same. They both are water resistant and light-weight, they both have necklace, bracelet and belt-clip configurations, and they both connect to certified EMT emergency operators. With either system, you are getting the best trained operators, and the top of the line equipment.

Purple Tomatoes?

A new breed of tomato called Indigo Rose is debuting this year. Instead of bright red, this tomato is a dark purple in color. Why should the consumer care about a new color? Well the purple comes from antioxidants called anthocyanins, which are the same antioxidants that cause blueberries to be "blue". This means that by eating these tomatoes, you are essentially getting the same antioxidants you would get from both the tomato itself and from eating blueberries. I haven’t been able to find a local store selling these, but if you’re a gardener, search for Indigo Rose seeds and you will find many sites offering them.

Antibiotics Used by Ancient Nubians?

Most people believe antibiotics have been around for 80 years. Surprisingly, antibiotics have been around for 2000 years, since the time of the Nubians. The antibiotics they were taken were ingested in the form of beer, from grain that had been contaminated by tetracycline producing mold. Now obviously the Nubians did not know they were ingesting tetracycline, or taking antibiotics, but they did know that consuming the moldy grain helped them feel better.

How to Boost Your Memory

Despite all the evidence that exists with aging and memory loss, there is something that helps those who age boost their memory. Seniors have the ability to “hyper-bind” irrelevant information and tie it to other more relevant information to remember both parts of the information during an event. This means that although it is harder to remember something specific, there are triggers and if you can properly use these triggers to remember all parts of a situation, you should be able to increase your memory. Try associating certain things with other events (create a picture in your head and visualize the picture and the memory) and you’ll be surprised with how much your memory increases.

Positive Thinking

We have always been told to see the glass as half full instead of half empty. This may have an impact on both the young and old. The impact starts as young as 5 years old and continues well into old age. Positive thinking has been associated with lower levels body inflammation and therefore lower rates of cancers and other caustic diseases. Try thinking positive for a couple weeks and more than likely you will have more energy than you had 10 years before. It’s amazing how powerful the mind is.

Color and Taste

The color of your food can and does influence how you perceive the taste of your food. If you serve your food on a black plate you may not enjoy the flavors as much as if it were served on a white plate. In the article below, Spanish researchers put a strawberry mousse on a black and a white plate. Those served on a white plate perceived the dessert to be 15-20 percent sweeter.

A Trick for Eating Less

A trick for eating less: change the color, size and weight of your plate. Simply serving the dishes on heavier plates causes the human mind to think that they are fuller quicker. Putting food on a white plate also has a similar effect. The effects aren’t fully aunderstood, but they are real and do exist. Additionally if the plate is smaller, the body perceives there to be more food taken in. Try all of these options and see if it works for you.

Should I Pay Attention to BMI?

Most people are looking for the all in one measure determinant to tell them if they are in good shape or could use to lose some weight. There really is no better or worse measurement except body fat percentage. BMI and pretty much every other number determinant are irrelevant. They speak to the middle of the road and are a general prediction, but for those that really want to know whether they are in shape, are overweight or are just where they are supposed to be, get a body fat percentage check.
